For all but the most experienced and successful poker players, the game of poker is normally a little more than just happenstance. It’s a game of skill. You can study the strategies and try to work out the odds of winning with any given hand, but when it comes down to it unless you have X-ray vision or mind-reading powers, then you are in the lap of the gods.
But with the latest update of PokerStars’ free app for Android, which landed on October 13, all that has changed. Now you can play poker your way, and get all the cards you’ve ever dreamed of getting without having to hide an ace up your sleeve.
PokerStars is the world’s leading online poker platform, so it’s fair to say that they know a thing or two about the game. From the straightforward five-card stud to the wildly popular Texas Hold ‘em, the app covers all your favorite forms of poker in a range of different ways.
You can play the house or take on players from around the globe in live games. You can also play for hard cash or just play for fun. And you can even play for a place in prestigious poker tournaments in exotic locations, winning a place at the table in Monte Carlo or the Bahamas.
As well as a choice of games, there’s always been a choice of playing styles, with multi-table games, table chat and the fast-paced “zoom poker” available. But now the new update has taken things a step further to give you the game you’ve always dreamed about.
If you’ve ever thought if only I had better hole cards, if only I knew what I was going to be dealt or if only I could see what my opponents were holding, then you’ll love the new Power Up feature. Power Up is set in a world from the future where all the rules have faded into the past. Here you can sneak a peek at your opponent’s hand, see what is next in the deck and even swap your own cards if you don’t fancy your odds.
PokerStars describes the new features as “supercharged poker” that gives you “game-changing powers”, and you really will feel like a superstar player as hand after hand falls perfectly for you. It may take a bit of getting used to, but then when you’re on a roll of terrible cards, a bit of help is always welcome. Power Up is a great way of sharpening your poker skills, too, so you’ll know what to do in a real game if you suddenly hit a rich run of form.
It’s all just light-hearted fun and something of a sideshow to the main event of the PokerStars app. But since the app has already been rated a full five stars by over half of the users on Google Play, even before the latest upgrade, that is no bad thing. After all, we’ve got fantasy football, with your dream team of perfect players, so why not fantasy poker, with your dream hand. With all that is going on in the world right now, it’s nice to enjoy a little escapism.
So, deal me in and get ready to read ‘em and weep! Poker just got powered up! The new PokerStars app version 1.89.0 requires Android 4.0 and is rated PEGI18.
