How to Clear Up USB Storage on Android

You are here: Home > Android Trips and Tricks > Clearning USB Storage

In this short guide you will learn how to effectively mange USB storage on your Android device.

Do you want to clear up more USB storage on Android? To know what takes up USB storage on your Android device? Or you just want to know how to free up some space on your phone? Are these your questions and concerns?

Whatever your case is, you should get to know three great ways of clearing USB storage on Android devices. Don't worry, though. You don't have to be an Android geek or a techie person. These ways are super-easy.

How to Clear Up USB Storage From Within Your Phone

You can do pretty many things from within your phone. If your phone is rooted, you can do practically everything with it (if you don't know what rooting is, here's an article for you). Clearing up your external memory is one of them. Here's how you do it:

  • If you want to format your USB storage (clear it totally), you just have to go to Settings > Storage > SD card > Format SD card. The phone will ask you if you are sure (because you will permanently lose all the data on the card). Look at the screenshots below.
  • If you want to free up more space on your SD card , you can use one of many great apps just for that. I strongly recommend using NEW SD CARD Storage Optimizer app (you can download it from Google Play here). The app will let you analyze your SD storage and clean in from unnecessary files within seconds.

Connect Your Phone to Computer and Clear USB Storage From Within Your PC

You can also easily clear up your phone's storage from your computer. All you have to do is connect your phone to your computer (if you have Windows 7 or 8 you will not have to install drives), wait until your computer "sees" the phone and then clear the storage. You will see two folders in your phone like this:

Manually Clean or Free Up Some Space on Your SD Card

If you somehow don't want or cannot apply the two ways above, you can also manually clear your USB storage. All you have to do is remove the card and insert it, for example, into an adapter and then into your computer. Once it's inserted, the computer will see it as a drive you can easily manage.
